The VRChat total is VRChat's own count across every headset, desktop and phone, from the feed behind its public status page. The rest come from Steam and count only people who launched through Steam. Quest standalone, the Meta store, Pico and phones are not included, so the real numbers are higher. Refreshed every five minutes.

Twelve years at a glance

Who lasted, who didn't

Social VR began with the Oculus Rift development kits. VRChat's first build ran on the DK1 in January 2014, and it is still the largest platform. Most of the others it grew up alongside are gone.

2026 was a hard year. Rec Room closed on 1 June after ten years. Meta stopped new VR building in Horizon Worlds to concentrate on phones. Spatial ended its creator tiers, and the company behind ENGAGE went into liquidation. Microsoft Mesh, which replaced AltspaceVR, had already closed on 1 December 2025.

A timeline from 2013 to 2026 with one bar per platform. Still running: VRChat from 2014, ChilloutVR from 2021, Resonite from 2023, the Hubs Foundation and Basis from 2024. Ended: vTime XR 2015 to 2025, AltspaceVR 2015 to 2023, Rec Room 2016 to 2026, Oculus Rooms 2016 to 2019, Facebook Spaces 2017 to 2019, Echo VR 2017 to 2023, NeosVR 2018 to 2025, Mozilla Hubs 2018 to 2024, Microsoft Mesh 2024 to 2025. Horizon Worlds runs from 2021 and stops being a VR platform in 2026.
Teal bars are still running, grey bars have closed, and gold marks a platform that left VR. Each bar starts at the first public release.

Basis: social VR you host yourself

Basis is an open-source, MIT-licensed social VR framework built on Unity 6. Its lead developer, Luke Dooly, works on it full-time, funded by donations. It runs on PC VR and Quest, with an early browser build. Instead of one central service, anyone can run a Basis server from an official Docker image and invite people in.
